 During rush hour on the morning of February 22, 2012 at the Once de Septiembre train station in Buenos Aires, the city suffered one of the worst train accidents in its history. Due to lack of maintenance, the train’s brakes failed to bring it to a halt before it collided with the buffer stops at 16mph (26 km/hr), killing 51 people and injuring more than 700. The motor carriage and the following two carriages were crushed; the second carriage was telescoped 7 metres (23 ft) into the first. On the 11-month anniversary of the crash, family members of the victims gathered to remember their loved ones, as well as to demand justice and improvement in the conditions in which the trains are run. Over the entrance to this slum hangs a sign which translates to "The Portal to New Victory." The shacks are built on top of what is essentially a construction waste dump. Many of the men work breaking up the old cement to recycle it, and many of the people living there sort through the garbage to find anything to use or sell. (21 February 2013, Lima, Peru)
